When it came time to plan my son’s 6th birthday party, he decided on a basketball theme and asked to incorporate his favorite team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. To set the tone of the party, I ordered a 5 ft black and white poster of Lebron James dunking a basketball to hang above the sweets table. I included a buttercream basketball cake, along with sugar cookies in the shape of basketball jerseys and chocolate Oreos with the Cleveland Cavaliers logo. I displayed the sweets on simple white cake pedestals and platters and added varying heights to the table with the use of two navy blue locker bins, which tied in the sports theme. I kept the tablescape kid-friendly with the use of basketball paper plates, personalized mini water bottles and pinstripe basketball containers. A painted paper mache number and two mini floral arrangements served as the centerpiece for the table. [line] For entertainment, the party guests played against each other on an arcade basketball game in our basement. They kept score on a magnetic basketball bulletin board hung right next to the game. They also loved making plays on the court by moving the magnetic basketballs around the board. Across from the game, I set up a seating area for the kids to hang out while waiting to play. I used folding chairs accented with a basketball pillow and a Cleveland Cavaliers pillow. Above the seating area, I displayed the party favors which included “championship ring pops” and plastic trophies personalized with “you’re an all-star” which the kids loved. My favorite part of the day was the smile on my son’s face while he saw the party for the first time. He had the best day playing basketball and spending time with his friends and family. And I love that so many of the pieces we used to decorate, like the Lebron poster, basketball bulletin board, locker storage bins and basketball pillows, can continue to be used in his playroom long after the party.
