We are officially more than one week into 2020 and somehow I feel like I am just finally getting into a routine after the holidays. In addition to organizing and goal setting, one of my very favorite ways to kick off a new year is to do trend research for the party industry.
I keep a running list on my phone of party trends that catch my eye throughout the year and then make it a point to sit down during the first week of January to research other new trends and find example photos so I can share my top party trends with you all on my blog.
One common thread I noticed on this year’s list is that many of the trends are inspired by home decor elements and decor at large-scale weddings and events. While this has been the case in other prior years as well, I am inspired to see the innovative ways that people are finding to make the trends more affordable and accessible to those throwing everyday celebrations.
Here are my top party trends for 2020, but of course keep in mind that this list is fluid and up to your own interpretation! I would love to hear what party trends you think will be popular in the upcoming year in the comments!
PAMPAS GRASS / DRIED FLOWERS

I almost can’t believe that how fast the pampas grass / dried flower trend burst on the scene in the party space. Literally everywhere you look for inspiration online, from large scale events to every day parties, you see dried flowers and fluffy pampas grass being used. I see this trend continuing to go strong in 2020 with more unique flower arrangements that blend both fresh and dried flowers. While pampas grass can be a bit pricey, I love that it can be used over and over again, and usually lasts a few years if taken care of well. It is also great that you can find many dried grasses and palms by foraging your own yard depending on where you live!
LIGHT CANOPIES

One thing I love about the light canopy trend is that it took a dated decor element (inexpensive light strands) and made it modern again by simply displaying the strands in a new way. While this trend has mostly spotted been spotted in luxe weddings and events to date, I definitely see this trend taking hold in 2020 with more light canopies created by the DIY host/hostess on a budget. I think the frame of a pop-up tent (without the tarp on top) would make a great base to drape the lights, and most people already have twinkle light strands that they use to decorate their house during the holidays. I hope to try this trend myself once the weather gets warmer in Cleveland!
GRAZING TABLES

While charcuterie boards made my top trends list last year, I found it impossible not include grazing tables on the list year. The charcuterie trend has not only continued to grow, but it has evolved to include full on grazing tables that are becoming very popular in parties of all types. In 2020, you’ll also see different types of foods used in grazing tables and grazing boards, such as a dessert board filled candies, cookies and nuts or perhaps a Mediterranean grazing board with hummus, fresh veggies, and pita bread. The best part about the grazing table trend is that you can scale it up or down based on your budget, and it can be completely customized based on the type of party you are hosting too!
CHAMPAGNE WALLS

This trend originated in the wedding space, first spotted as an escort card wall where guests could grab a glass of champagne on the way to their table. In 2020, we’ll see the champagne wall continue to gain popularity, especially in smaller scale celebrations, such as bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and other gatherings hosted a home thanks to tabletop champagne walls, such as this one from One Stylish Party, that provides an easy and affordable way to set up a stylish bubbly bar!

Printable files are one of the most cost-effective ways to make a statement with your party decor and many people are starting to catch on! Whenever I am pressed for time, or on a strict budget, I always turn to Etsy to search for existing digital designs that I can customize and print myself. From invites to backdrop signs and favor tags to food labels, there is no shortage of trendy printable details available to purchase, and best of all, these files are often less expensive than store bought decorations and look more personalized too!
STREAMER BACKDROPS

Streamer backdrops have made our list two years in a row, but if it is possible, I think these will be even more popular in 2020 than in 2019. In fact, I think this trend was just getting started last year, and now that more small-scale and DIY options are available, I think the streamer backdrop trend will be spotted in many more everyday celebrations this year. I love that streamer backdrops add a wow-factor to a party and can be completely customized to match an event’s color scheme. It also creates a fun photo op for those looking to create an “instagram-able” moment at their party.
