Tissue tassels seem to be all the rage lately. Whether they are paired with a jumbo confetti filled balloon or strung in a garland, tissue tassels add a unique, colorful flair to any room. Lately it seems like I have been spending much of my time creating balloon tassels and tassel garlands, so I thought I would document the process on how to make a tissue tassel garland to share with you today. I know there are many tutorials out there, this just happens to be the technique that works best for me.
This tutorial also marks my entry into a new social media channel, Vine! I like to think that I am pretty savvy when it comes to social media, but I have to admit it took me THREE tries (over the course of a few days) to get my six second Vine video right. I guess you know how that saying goes….the third time is the charm! Even with my learning curve, I am totally digging Vine and the appeal of condensing lots of info into one extremely short video. Yep, you heard it right. How to make a tissue tassel garland all crammed into a quick 6 second looping video. Pretty cool right?
And now for the full details on how to make a tissue tassel garland below!
- Tissue paper in desired colors (be sure to iron to remove any creases or wrinkles!)
- Rotary cutter
- Ruler
- Cutting mat
- Hot glue
- Twine
- Fishing line
Directions:
Neatly stack 4 sheets of tissue paper one on top of the other. Start by folding the tissue paper in half width-wise (towards you) so the folded it edge is at the top of the stack of tissue paper. Then fold in half again, this time length-wise (matching the left corner to the right corner) so the second folded edge is now on the left side of the tissue paper stack.
Next, line your folded tissue paper up on the cutting mat and use your ruler and rotary cutter to cut straight vertical lines across the tissue paper approximately every half inch. Make sure to leave about an inch at the top so it does not cut all the way through the top folded edge. For the final cut in the tissue paper, slice all the way through the top edge of the tissue paper and separate the two layers.
Set aside and repeat the first three steps to make your desired number of tassels.
Now unfold the tissue paper and lay it flat. The folded edge should be in the middle with the tissue fringe on either side. Start from the bottom and gently roll the tissue paper away from you until you reach the top edge. Twist the tissue paper in the middle between the two cut edges to create a loop. Dab with hot glue to ensure the tissue tassel stays together.
Weave a strange of jute twine through your desired number of tissue tassels. For balloons tassels, I space the tassels out every 4 inches. For garlands, I typically space the tassels every 6 inches. To ensure the tassels do not slide around, I secure each tassels with a piece of fishing line.
